Membership Information

Since 1934 the Abe Harrison American Legion Post 174 remains focused on serving Central Texas Veterans, their families, and the Georgetown community.  Post membership is key to maintaining and growing our Post, thereby enhancing our ability to create meaningful impact in our community.  The benefits associated with membership are many and varied. In every activity the Post engages in we strive to highlight Veterans and their service to the community, state and nation. While the joy of fellowship is important our support of Boy Scout Troop 151 and Cub Scout Pack 151, local JROTC units, Boys State sponsorships, and academic scholarship are tangible reflections of our dedication to our community and youth.

Eligibility

If you have served federal active duty in the United States Armed Forces since

December 7, 1941 and have been honorably discharged or are still serving - you are eligible for membership in The American Legion!

* Because eligibility dates remain open, all active-duty members of the U.S. Armed Forces are eligible to join The American Legion at this time, until the date of the end of hostilities as determined by the government of the United States.

** U.S. Merchant Marines eligible only from December 7, 1941, to December 31, 1946 (WWII).

Honorable active or past military service is a requirement for membership in The American Legion.

Please note:

  • DD-214's for the applicant will be required to determine eligibility.

  • Our Post is required to verify service dates and discharge status of all new members and transfer members using information from form DD-214.  This is a requirement of the IRS in order to keep our non-profit status.

However, we are not required to maintain this document.  Current and new members are encouraged to have their DD-214 recorded with the County Clerk.  This service is provided free of charge.

* Texas Government Code, Section 552.140 (a) (b) requires county clerks to make all DD-214s registered after September 1, 2003 confidential for 75 years.
